When Copying Is Okay: The "Fair Use" Rule
Fair use is a copyright principle based on the belief that the public is entitled to freely use portions of copyrighted materials for purposes of commentary and criticism. The tricky part is figuring out when it's permissible. Borrowing words for criticism and comment, news reporting, research and scholarship, nonprofit educational uses, and parody are usually considered fair use. If you write or publish, you need at least a basic understanding of what is and is not fair use.
