Burglary Definition
The offense of illegally entering a building with the intent to commit a crime inside. In the past, most states defined burglary as using force to break into a residence at night. Modern burglary statutes tend to be much broader. Today, burglary is generally defined as simply entering any building without permission at any time of day in order to steal something or commit a felony inside. (See also: felony)
